Estevan & Weyburn to Celebrate First Ever Pride Week Events

Both Estevan and Weyburn are set to make history next week with Pride Week celebrations that will include each city’s first official raising of the rainbow flag.

Weyburn Mayor, Debra Button, signed a proclamation for Weyburn Pride Week last Monday while Estevan Mayor, Roy Ludwig, is set to issue a similar proclamation for “Estevan Pride Week” today.

Joe Wickenhauser, Executive Director for Moose Jaw Pride, said that a grant received from the Community Initiatives Fund has allowed his organization to partner with LGBT+ people in smaller centres to host various events throughout the year.

“We are so proud of the leaders who have emerged through our work in Estevan and Weyburn to help build safer, more welcoming and more inclusive communities across Saskatchewan.”

Luca Kuchinka, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, said they were excited to play a role in organizing the first ever rainbow flag raising in Estevan, adding that it will be a huge step forward for the city.

“This flag raising is dedicated to the LGBT+ people who lived or continue to live in and around Estevan–you are loved; you are not alone. You have a place in this community alongside everyone else,” Kuchinka said.

In light of the recent shootings of LGBT+ people in the US, Kuchinka added that the flag raising in Estevan will also be dedicated to the victims of the Orlando Massacre.

“This flag raising is a symbol of solidarity, strength, and unity; this community will not be torn apart by bigotry and ignorance. We will support each other through tragedies and celebrations, unbreakable and unmoving,” Kuchinka said.

Estevan’s rainbow flag raising ceremony is open to anyone who wants to show their support for diversity and will take place at Estevan City Hall on Monday, June 27 at 12:15pm. Various dignitaries are expected to attend the event which will be followed by cake and socializing.

In Weyburn, a full week of events has been organized by Rhiannon Benjamin in partnership with Moose Jaw Pride. Absolutely everyone who supports gender & sexual diversity is encouraged to attend.
