Hashtags, Art and Pride at Youth Leadership Camp in Moose Jaw

Registration is now open for Moose Jaw Pride’s “#MJLifeHack Youth Leadership Camp” for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies.

The camp, which runs from August 2 – 6, aims to engage local youth in spreading information through social media about how to access different community services, particularly those relating to sexual health, mental health and substance use.

A “LifeHack” is a common hashtag referring to advice, resources, tips or tricks that make life easier. The camp’s organizers hope that using social media to promote community services in Moose Jaw will help make life easier for LGBTQ+ youth in the city.

According to Joe Wickenhauser, Executive Director for Moose Jaw Pride, since many LGBTQ+ people fear discrimination when accessing services like healthcare, it is important that LGBTQ+ youth get to know what services will be supportive of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

The 30 youth who are accepted into the program will also have the opportunity to work with a different LGBTQ+ artist each day of the camp to build skills around digital storytelling, making zines, spoken word poetry and more.

“Service agencies need to hear from our youth and work with them to create safer spaces and improve access,” Wickenhauser said. Both the art and discussions from the camp will be used to develop resources and provide feedback to the participating agencies.

“It will be a great chance for students to get together partway through the summer break, learn about and improve valuable community services, creatively express themselves and get piles of free food,” Wickenhauser said.

The camp, which is free of charge, is jointly funded through the Community Initiatives Fund, the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute and Moose Jaw Pride. The facilities for the camp will be provided by the Prairie South School Division.

The #MJLifeHack Youth Leadership Camp is open to all LGBTQ+ students (and allies) in Moose Jaw and surrounding area who were in Grade 7 – 12 in the past school year.

Youth are encouraged to register by July 15 as the seats for the camp are expected to fill up quickly.
