The board of directors for Moose Jaw Pride is proud to announce the appointment of Joe Wickenhauser as the organization’s first-ever Executive Director. Joe will begin working for the organization in this role starting in early January.

The decision was made at a special board meeting held this month, where Joe stepped down from his position as Chair of the Board. Sarah Simison, a founding board member for the organization, was elected to fill the Chair position.

In 2013, Joe organized Pride Week in Moose Jaw with the theme “Unexpected Neighbours, Unexpected Friends.” The following year, Joe began his term as the Chair of the Board of Directors when the organization officially registered as a non-profit corporation.

Joe was born in Regina and raised on a small acreage outside of Strasbourg, SK until he moved to Moose Jaw with his family in 2003. He graduated from Caronport High School and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Linguistics from the University of Saskatchewan and a master’s degree in anthropology from York University in Toronto. His master’s thesis, “Surprisingly Unexpected: Moose Jaw, Metronormativity and LGBTQ Activism” focused on the history of LGBTQ lives and experiences in Moose Jaw.

Moose Jaw Pride’s first employee position was made possible by the Community Initiatives Fund, which announced it would be awarding $25,000 to the organization this past November.

Moose Jaw Pride’s current Board of Directors includes:

Sarah Simison – Chair of the Board
Jenn New – Vice Chair of the Board
Jim Tenford – Treasurer
Karmen Krahn – Secretary
Nillin Dennison – Gender Diversity Representative
Falon Dennison – Member at Large
